Access
Overview
The ACCESS Program is designed to assist students in participating public high schools in the Tidewater area in furthering their education beyond high school. ACCESS advisors are available in each participating high school to give assistance with the application process for college, and in getting financial aid.
ACCESS will provide instruction and assistance to students and parents in understanding and completing federal, state, and institutional financial aid and admission forms. They will provide fees for applications, need analysis, and tests for eligible students in cases where need is evident and waivers cannot be obtained.
ACCESS works in the schools through advisors who identify, contact and assist eligible seniors who are interested in post-secondary education. They will provide information on college admission and academic requirements, test registration requirements, and financial aid sources.
Advisors will assist students in completing application and admission forms, and in compiling information and documents necessary for the admission process.
ACCESS advisors will explain the financial aid process to students and conduct financial aid workshops to assist them in completing the financial aid form(s) required by the colleges selected. Advisors have admission applications, financial aid forms, scholarship and loan information, and other information about post-secondary education available in the ACCESS office.
Students can see advisors throughout their junior and senior year. Students are often referred to the ACCESS advisor by their school counselor or teacher. Students may visit the ACCESS office during free periods to set up an appointment, following school procedures. Parents or guardians may also request appointments by calling the ACCESS advisor. It is recommended that seniors meet with the advisor at least twice per semester.
